- WORKSHOPS & MASTER CLASSES
- TROMBONE - MASTER CLASS:
THE JAZZ-TROMBONIST
Historical aspects. Stylistic aspects. Technical aspects from sound / vibrato to tonguing / articulation. The Slide: movement, alternate positions - why, how and where to use them. The importance of breath-control and how to achieve it / expand it. Range, flexibility etc., all of course adapted to the level of the participating students. Will not specifically cover the basic elements of jazz-improvisation, as that can be studied elsewhere, but will deal with the relating problems trying to adapt these elements to the trombone, considering its physical possibilities, advantages and limitations.
Depending on the number of students and availability of a rhythm-section, it will be possible to work with as well improvisation as ensemble-playing.
For the more advanced jazz-players: Discussing the aspects of developing a personal and readily identifiable sound / style / vocabulary while retaining and further developing ones versatility to meet the diverse demands of a top-flight pro. 2 - 4 hours, 1 or more sessions, depending on the given situation
ENSEMBLES:
THE TENTET:
Alto/Soprano/Flute, Tenor/Soprano/Flute, Baritone, LeadTrumpet, SoloTrumpet, SoloTrombone, BassTrombone / BbTuba, Piano, Bass and Drums.
Working out of the Erling Kroner Tentet book. Original Kroner -material from his various LPs and CDs - with inspirations from Mingus, Gil Evans, Carla Bley, Piazzolla, Saluzzi and other Latin Musics, the Blues, Ballads etc.
A JazzWorkshop demanding the utmost of the participating musicians as ensemble-players and soloists, with its complex arrangements, where every instrument is written to its limit, and the soloists are taken through unorthodox changes, keys, times and forms. Not for the feeble-hearted, but for the up-coming, serious student a unique chance to dig into a very powerful and different musical universe.
3 - 5 days of rehearsal, concluding with a concert
THE NONET:
Alto/Soprano, Soprano/Tenor, Tenor/Soprano, Baritone, 2 Trombones, Guitar, Bass and Drums.
Working out of the Erling Kroner Dark Side Orchestra book. Similar to the Tentet-workshop, but with a different instrumentation and even more emphasis on the musician as interpreter / soloist. Where the Tentet could be thought of as almost a mini-big band, the DSO definitely has the feel of a large small-group.
Again a very demanding, but for the musician also very giving, situation, challenging any musician, student or professional, ensemble-wise and especially as a soloist/interpreter.
3 - 5 days of rehearsal, concluding with a concert
THE BIG BAND:
Solo-tb, 4 - 5 saxes, 4 - 5 trumpets, 2 - 3 tbs, 1 basstb, piano, bass, drums, (guitar, perc.)
Working out of the Erling Kroner Big Band book, from Mingus to Monk from Kroner to Piazzolla - Tango Nuevo and Jazz - original Kroner-compositions.(see total listing of Erling Kroner big band arrangements)
Focusing on phrasing, interpretation, balance, sound, vibrato and last, but not least: The role of the jazz-soloist in a given context, how to expand the scope of the written music through improvisation (Duke, Mingus, Monk) and thereby bringing out new aspects in ones own playing.
3 - 5 days of rehearsal, concluding with a concert
